General Election 2010: Gary Barlow unveiled as David Cameron backer

Take That star Gary Barlow joined David Cameron on the campaign trail today as the Tories launched plans for an X Factor-style singing competition for schools.

The band's frontman was greeted by screaming schoolchildren as he arrived with the Tory leader at Brine Leas High School, in Nantwich, Cheshire.

His arrival came as the Tories said they would launch a national ''School Stars'' competition to encourage musical achievement among young people.

Backed by senior figures from the music industry, it is aimed at giving young people a chance to shine.

Barlow confirmed he would be supporting the Tories at the election.

"I would not be here if I was not," the singer said.

But he stressed he did not want to go into detail as today's event was about music, not politics.

Mr Barlow said he missed the debate last night as he was at a Music Week dinner, but was "looking forward to watching it tonight".
