We're on top of the world

GARY BARLOW wept as he finally reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

It had taken seven months’ planning but Gary and the eight other celebs conquered the 19,330ft peak and raised almost £1.5million for Comic Relief.

He said: “The challenge was totally underestimated by every one of us. The climb was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I never want to see a tent or a sleeping bag again! To be told each day the amount we had raised kept our spirits up. So thank you so much to the beautiful British public for being so generous.”

Day Seven - Gary Barlow and Ronan Keating

Gary: "This has been an amazing trip for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the climbers - each successful in their own right, not trying to revive a fading career and totally up for coming out of their comfort zone for a monumental charity event. Second, to hear the totals everyday has kept our spirits up so thank you so much to the beautiful British public for being so generous. Lastly, the challenge, totally underestimated by every one of us, this climb was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life - I never want to see a tent or a sleeping bag ever again! The summit was a massive high but the previous eight days have been down right miserable, cold and lonely. Thank goodness we're gonna change, and hopefully save, lives with our efforts."

Gary Barlow's Climb Diary Day six

"WAKE-up call was at 6am but all my sickness and worries had gone. Today was a big day and all we had to do was make it through the seven hours to High Camp – then we’d be nearly at the summit.

On the walk we split up more than before, all going at our own speed. Halfway along we all dialled in to CHRIS MOYLES’s show and heard messages from our families.

It was very emotional but just the kind of support needed to get us through the final night.

For the first time on the ascent we saw other climbers and had our pictures taken with them. It was weird and reminded us of who we are when we’re not on this mountain. They also gave us advice for the summit.

Arrived at camp at 3pm with DENISE VAN OUTEN and ALESHA DIXON. We’d had a good laugh on the way up. Early dinner tonight with a final briefing from our guide about what’s in store for us the following day. It’s 6pm and I’m off to bed. Our wake-up call is at midnight and we set off for the summit at 1am.

Back’s been great today, getting better by the day."

Gary Barlow - Kilimanjaro

Day 3.

Of The BT Red Nose Climb: The group witness the effects of altitude sickness on Ronan’s 32nd Birthday

Comic Relief’s celebrity climbers surprised Ronan Keating on the morning of his 32nd birthday by rousing him from his tent with a birthday singsong, balloons and cards from his family and friends.

Later on Ronan was in for more birthday treats when the group set up camp in the clouds and presented him with a huge birthday cake. An embarrassed Ronan joked “Girls Aloud, Gary Barlow, Alesha Dixon – all these big mega stars singing Happy Birthday to me, it was really special, really great”.

Gary Barlow was forced to wait behind during the optional acclimatisation walk due to his back pain which is still causing the group concern. Gary said "I woke up with bad back this morning. The rest of the guys did a big acclimatisation climb, but I gave my back a rest and went with a guide on my own for a lonely 4 hour trek. It was the right thing to do though - I'm feeling better tonight - big day tomorrow."

With money raised through this extraordinary event, Comic Relief will be able to provide mosquito nets in Africa that can help prevent potentially fatal bites that cause malaria, as well as helping extremely vulnerable, poor and disadvantaged people here in the UK.
