Hold Up A Light Music Video Live - Take That

Out - 23rd November 2009

Gary Barlow wants fish and chips party for 10th wedding anniversary

He might be a global pop star with a string of charttopping hits and a multimillion-pound fortune.

But singer Gary Barlow is still a down-to-earth lad at heart.
The Take That frontman has invited 100 pals to celebrate his 10th wedding anniversary with dancing, bingo and a slap-up meal... of fish and chips.

Gary and wife Dawn, who have one of the most solid marriages in show business, are throwing a £250,000 party at the swanky Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. Guests, who are thought to include Gary's bandmates Mark, Howard and Jason and old pal Robbie Williams, have been told the dress code is "glamorous".

But the food will be anything but, laid on by famous fish and chip chain Harry Ramsden's.
An insider said: "There will be oodles of the finest champagne, of course. And the venue is very swish. But Gary and Dawn are everyday folk at heart. They didn't want daft French scoff.

"Who needs it when you can have fish, chips and a good dollop of mushy peas?" She added: "Even the invites are typical of them. There's a bottle of champagne with bingo balls bursting out of the top.
"They might be worth a fortune but they know how to have a good time.
"And although they've been married for 10 years, they're still madly in love."

Gary, 38, met former backing dancer Dawn, 39, when she worked with Take That as they found fame the first time round.

He proposed with a £10,000 ring after a four-year romance and they wed on the Caribbean island of Nevis in 2000.

The couple, who live in London, have three children - Daniel, nine, Emily, seven, and nine-monthold Daisy.

She Moved Through The Fair - Camilla Kerslake

Gary Barlow changed my life, by classical diva Camilla Kerslake

Wrapped up against the bitter cold, aspiring singer Camilla Kerslake stood outside a recording studio in London hoping to catch a glimpse of her hero, Gary Barlow.

The student had heard a rumour that the Take That star was launching his own record label - and she was determined to land her first contract.

So virtually every day for six weeks, Camilla would set off from her home in Guildford, Surrey, and catch a train to the studios in West London, where Barlow has a permanent base. In total she handed across 40 CDs of her work - singing Schubert's Ave Maria, set to a £2.99 backing track she had bought on the internet, or Pie Jesu.

And her persistence paid off. One afternoon last December, Camilla received a telephone call from Celia McCamley, Barlow's partner in the music publishing company San Remo - and three days later she became the first artist to be signed to his new record label, Future Records.

It has been a meteoric rise for the singer, who paid her way through college by performing at weekends and by trading goods on auction website eBay.

Tomorrow, Camilla's debut single, She Moved Through The Fair, is released and her eponymous album comes out on November 16.

She has also landed an advertising deal with Waitrose - her version of How Can I Keep From Singing will be the soundtrack for its Christmas advertisements - and is appearing on BBC1's Singing For The Troops on Christmas Eve.

A recording she has made of Take That's Rule The World, sung in Italian, has already become a YouTube hit, with more than 80,000 views at the last count.

'I was a student, literally living hand-to-mouth,' says Camilla, 21. 'I was gigging at the weekends just to make ends meet. 'I had to call in favours to make my demo tapes. Luckily there were production students at university always looking for new people to work with.
'Then I heard a whisper that Gary might be starting a record label. As a music student you hear a lot of gossip about music but I had never met anyone with a bad word to say about Gary, despite the fact that he's an incredibly successful songwriter in an incredibly successful band.
'I found out that Take That were recording at the Sarm Studios in London so I went there nearly every day for six weeks. I had to fit the four-hour trip around my lectures because if you missed more than three lectures a term, you faced disciplinary action.
'It was fine if I didn't have a lecture until 3pm but if I had one at 10am, it meant I had to leave home at 6am. Then I had to try to make myself look fabulous as there was always the possibility that Gary would be there. It wasn't as though I could have a shower, brush my teeth and just go. 'I used to befriend the receptionists and take them coffees so they would let me in. I was ridiculously persistent. People have been calling me a stalker but it was worth it.'

Camilla was spending the afternoon with her boyfriend Michael, a percussionist, and his flatmates, when she received the call that would change her life.
'Celia didn't give anything away about herself,' recalls Camilla. 'All she did was ask me about myself. After the conversation I was left with more questions than answers. Luckily for me she rang back about an hour later and explained everything.'

The following Monday, after borrowing £20 from her parents, Camilla invested in a pair of black jeans from Primark and a £4 top from New Look and took the train to London to meet Gary at Sarm Studios. He pledged to sign her on the spot.

'It was phenomenal,' she says. 'I was meeting one of the most famous men in the music industry and being offered everything I'd ever dreamed of. I was incredibly star-struck.
'My parents are as proud as punch. My mum sees my career as something to be worked at and is great at keeping me grounded. My father sees it as a dream come true and is always sitting there in the centre of the front row grinning maniacally at me when I'm on stage.'

Camilla finally signed her contract on January 27 and recorded her album this summer in Ireland with producer Mike Hedges, who has worked with artists such as Dido and the Manic Street Preachers.

'When I first got into the studio, it was like a spaceship,' she laughed. 'I had no idea what all the knobs and whistles did.

'Luckily for me Gary has been showing me what to do, helping me with demo tracks and directing me in the way to take the record. He has been invaluable.'

Although she was born in Dulwich, South London, Camilla spent her early years in New Zealand. Her mother Deborah, 48, married chef Greg Morgan when Camilla was a baby, and the family moved to Auckland where Greg was known as the country's best pie-maker.

Camilla's love of classical music first emerged at primary school in Devonport, a suburb of Auckland.

'I went to a lovely little school,' she remembers. 'I was a junior cheerleader and I played rugby and cricket. I loved it there. One day my mother went in for parents' day and the teacher said, "Most children come in singing nursery rhymes but your daughter sings opera."
'If anything, Mum's more of a Celine Dion fan but, strangely, when she was pregnant with me, all she ever wanted to do was sit with a big bag of oranges on her lap, listening to classical music.'

The family returned to Britain when Camilla was eight, first settling in a hamlet on the outskirts of Preston, Lancashire, and later moving to Kingston, Surrey. However, life was still tough.

'It got to the point where we had so little to live off,' recalls Camilla. 'My father was doing poorly paid jobs where he had to cycle 20 miles to work and 20 miles back every day because we couldn't afford a car.
'All of us were super-slim because food was scarce. I got free school dinners and I think the dinner ladies knew the kids who didn't have much because they always gave me thirds.'

It was while she was a pupil at Holyfield School in Surbiton that Camilla first realised how gifted she was.

'I was 14 and in detention in the music room after school for having thrown a pencil at a friend during lessons. Our teacher was late arriving so I started messing around on the piano, hamming up the title song from The Sound Of Music.
'As I went up the register, the other kids who had been kept behind were all saying, "Wow, that's so high" and just for fun I went higher and higher. 'It was at that point that the teacher walked in. He had been listening outside and said, "Do you realise you've just sung half an octave higher than the highest note ever written for the human voice?"'

And so Camilla decided to concentrate on arts subjects at school rather than sciences.

'Normally when you say to your parents, "I don't want to be a doctor any more, I want to be a singer," they freak out. But when I told my mother, she said, "It's about time." She's not one to let people not live their dreams.'
Camilla took her A-levels in sociology, film studies, music and performing arts at Esher College in Surrey (she got two As, a B and a C) before beginning a degree at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford in September 2006. Thanks to her new-found success, she has deferred her final year.

Camilla funded herself through gigs and by selling a Chanel bag on eBay. 'I got it from a charity shop. It was a vintage gold-chain quilted bag which I bought for about £40 from Oxfam and sold it for about £1,800.
'That's what got me through university. I've always had to be resourceful. We never had any money in my family.'

Now, however, Camilla's fortunes look about to change.

Emma & Mark - press night 20-10-09

Gary sighted outside BBC Radio 1 Studios (30.10.2009)

Gary Barlow & Camilla Kerslake on GMTV

Watch Ben chat to Take That man Gary about his new record label, the Take That tour and what he really thinks about a reunion with Robbie.

Barlow promises 'one-off' duets

Take That frontman Gary Barlow says there will be some unique "one-off" duets at the Children In Need concert he's organising.
The singer is putting together a charity show at the Royal Albert Hall in London in November featuring some of the biggest names in UK music, including Muse, Sir Paul McCartney and Take That themselves.
Speaking to Chris Moyles, who will host the gig, Barlow said each act would be doing two songs but there would be also be "three or four one-off duets that have never been seen before."
When asked about the possibility of Dizzee Rascal partnering with Dame Shirley Bassey he teasingly replied: "I'm saying nothing, but make sure you're there."
Other names on the bill include Snow Patrol, Leona Lewis, Lily Allen, Cheryl Cole, Mika and Katherine Jenkins.
Barlow, who's now back at work following the unexpected death of his father two weeks ago, said he was surprised to get such a strong line-up for the concert.
"I wrote a list and sat there thinking, 'Right, if we can get half of this we'll be lucky', and every single person has agreed to do it.
"It's great. That's testament to the charity itself, people do love Children In Need. It is going to be a brilliant night and a bit of a one-off I think."
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will also add to the occasion by accompanying all the acts, in what Barlow described as a showcase of the best in UK music.

Elephant ride
The 38-year-old said after their record-breaking Circus tour, Take That were "not really doing much at the moment", but that their studio return wouldn't be far off.

Take That's Circus played to more than a million people this summer "We're starting our new record soon and we want a bit of a break now before any new music... It takes a good nine to 12 months to make an album."
The band's summer tour had exceeded their expectations, Barlow said. But he admitted he didn't appreciate the scale of the show - with its accompanying circus performers - until watching the band's upcoming live DVD.
"I was like, 'What's that going on behind us? I never knew that.' It's amazing! This other show just energises and you think 'Wow!'
"The best bit for us four was when that elephant goes up and you're like 20 metres above the whole stadium. It was hard not to smile at that point."
He also said the boys were looking forward to Mark Owen's wedding next weekend. The singer is preparing to marry his long-term fiancée Emma Ferguson, with whom he already has two children
Barlow remained tight-lipped about the event, but did admit the boys gave their bandmate a good send-off: "The stag do was good... it was grown-up messy," he joked.

The Children In Need concert takes place on 12 November and will be broadcast on BBC One on 19 November at 2000 GMT.

Take That let it Bee

THE TAKE THAT boys never stop surprising me - now they've got a secret BEE GEES karaoke tribute act, the GBs.
Their amusing alter-ego - a pun on GARY BARLOW's initials - comes to light on the lads' new live DVD, which I got to see yesterday.

Gary, MARK OWEN, HOWARD DONALD and JASON ORANGE sing a version of their own hit Rule The World in the high-pitched style of the Gibb brothers at the Abbey Road studios.

It's priceless.

Sadly, it won't ever come out as a single. But the man band are sure to get a double No1 with the DVD and the audio CD.

They are massive fans of the Bee Gees, and once covered their hit How Deep Is Your Love.

Take That Present: The Circus Live DVD, comes out on November 23.

If you're struggling for a Christmas present for the missus, your mum, auntie or sister - this is it. There's no shame in blokes owning it either. It's a two-disc masterpiece.

On the first disc is the brilliant Circus tour recorded at Wembley. It's a chance to relive the live show, which has to go down in history as one of the best.
The second is a slick film of the boys at Abbey Road doing a stripped-down version of The Circus album, with interviews between songs.
The session is shot beautifully in black and white.
The album version - just the music - comes out a week later, on November 30.

There are a few nice moments in the film when the lads banter between takes. Here are some of the highlights.

Gary: "When I was 15 I entered a comp to win a session at Abbey Road studio to record a song and then watch it being cut on vinyl. I won it. So one of my first ever recording experiences was here. It's been downhill ever since!"

Howard: "We've got a much bigger friendship now than we ever did. Gary used to write everything at such a rate we were always catching up. It's different now, with all of us sharing the writing."

Gary: "I throw gems, diamonds into the air, and they are all thrown back at me!"

Jason: "I'm the most negative in the band, asking, 'Can we do it better?' all the time. I always question if what we are doing is good enough."

Mark: "I was apprehensive about going into the studio to write together. Sometimes one of us has to go down a certain path with an idea before we all decide it's s***."

Jason: "The whole thing is greater than the sum of the parts. That realisation is a great thing. We need each other."

Mark: "I have written some great songs in my sleep. I sing lyrics into my phone. I'll wake up in the night and sing into my Dictaphone and try not to wake the missus.
"When I wake up in the morning it's just me mumbling and falling asleep - but when I'm dreaming I hear all the string arrangements and everything."

The sell-out Circus tour was seen by an incredible 1.2million people earlier this year.

Now there's every chance Take That could have the Christmas No1 DVD and album. Good luck to them.

THE Bee Gees reached No3 with their classic How Deep Is Your Love in 1977. When Take That released it in March 1996 - weeks after announcing they were splitting - it went to No1.

Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow "loved" watching new Take That DVD together

Gary Barlow has told how he played a Take That DVD for Robbie Williams - who declared that he "loved" it.

Speaking on GMTV, Gary told how he was having a meal with Robbie and suggested that they watch the recent footage of the band's tour.

Gary, 38, recalled: "I said 'Rob do you fancy having a listen?'
"I was up at his house one night having some sushi with him I said 'Shall we have a watch?'
"And I said to him 'Listen, flick through the bits you don't want to watch,' but we watched the whole thing and he loved it.
"And it was so nice to see him enjoying what we're doing."

Put to him that Robbie has said he felt he was missing out, Gary replied: "I think one of the things that Rob always says is that because it is him on his own, the whole weight of the show and being a performer is on his shoulder - all eyes are on him. And I must say, being part of a band, the responsibility is shared.
"And yeah I think he looks at that and probably would like it to be like that for him too. Yeah it's hard."

Gary said he had also listened to Robbie’s new album, Reality Killed The Video Star, declaring it was "brilliant, loved it, I knew I would".

Asked about any future plans to collaborate with his old bandmate, Gary said: "I mean, you know, everyone asks us and I do, I don't know when it will be but I definitely do, yep."

Gary also told how he signed Camilla Kerslake to his new label after she dropped off a demo CD at his office every day for six weeks.

He said of his opera singer protege: "I discovered her from her dropping CDs at my studio, and she literally dropped a CD off every day for about six weeks.
"And eventually I went down to the front desk and I said 'Where's this girl coming from? Is she attractive? Is she good?' and they were all like 'Oh yeah, you need to see her, she's great'."

The full interview airs on GMTV on ITV1 tomorrow.

Take That Soccer Song

Take That are set to record the official World Cup song for the England soccer team.
The 'Greatest Day' hitmakers - Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald - are in talks with the English Football Association to write a new anthem for the event, which takes place in South Africa next summer.
A source said: "Gary's really excited about it. He wants to make it a real belter that'll get the England fans on their feet.
"The Football Association have had approaches from lots of acts but Take That are the obvious choice."
If Take That do sign the deal, they will follow in the footsteps of New Order, the Lightening Seeds and the Spice Girls, who have all recorded and official song for the England team. Last month, it was reported Mel B wanted to get the Spice Girls back together for a one-off performance in South Africa at the same time as the World Cup, even if Victoria Beckham didn't want to take part.
A source said: "Mel's determined to get the girls back together for the World Cup and wants them to plough ahead as a foursome if Victoria doesn't want to take part. She has got the others excited by the idea of a one-off appearance. They are very interested."

Menssage Gary Barlow from your website

"Hi everyone

Can’t believe we’re in the last 3rd of the year. Even though our Tour was only 5 weeks long we’ve been living the show from January. It was a long road to that opening night but all worth it once we hit the stage. Every night was different too. I have to say it was the most enjoyable tour I’ve ever been a part of.

Thanks to all our amazing audiences and thanks to the great team of people that made our dream come true.

Hope it’s not too long till we tour again !

Little Baby Daisy

A lot has happened this year. The arrival of little Daisy has changed not only the size of our family but also provided us with a lot more work at home. For anyone who has 3 kids it’s not easy trying to give them all equal attention and at the same time trying to find sometime for you and your partner. All worth while but a challenge for sure.

Kilimanjaro Challenge

I may have said this thank you a thousand times but one more won’t hurt; To all who donated money to help our climb of Kilimanjaro, thank you so, so much. We’ve raised nearly 4 million pounds to date making our charity climb the highest earning challenge in HISTORY!!! Whooo

Coming later in the year...

I am in the process of putting together a concert for Children in Need. I hope to feature a host of great artists on one stage for a one night only performance that will be broadcast on BBC1 the week before CIN night. We’re hoping not only to raise money for the charity but also raise awareness for a truly great British Institution.

Christmas is coming!

As a band we’re putting together a great live DVD of the tour that will be out before Christmas. It will not only feature one of our four nights at Wembley Stadium but also an exclusive live acoustic session at the legendary Abbey road Studios.

Singstar have done a fantastic job on the Take that song book. Feel free to sing your heart out !!

Also we’ve put together a cracking book that shows in picture our history. Yes lot’s of embarrassing shots and stupid haircuts to sift through. It’s a nice book of memories for us guys too as it’s the culmination of 18 years of our lives and careers. Fantastic !

Look out for Camilla Kerslake

As usual any spare time I have I’m involved in trying to help and launch new artists. My big hope for this year is Camilla Kerslake. She’s only 20 years old (I’m nearly twice her age!).

She’s a classical singer with the voice of an angel.Look out for her on tv’s various and listen out for the voice behind the Waitrose advert !! Good luck Camilla !!

..And Finally

Hope you’re all well and thanks for visiting my site. I know updates are infrequent but they always arrive eventually !!!!"

'That was one Dame hard job'

Making sweet music ... Gary Barlow and Dame Shirley Bassey in the making of

GARY BARLOW spent three months labouring over the song he wrote for DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY - because he kept thinking "it's not good enough".
The singer reveals he never stretches beyond the two-hour mark when composing a tune for TAKE THAT.
However, he found the task of contributing a track to the Welsh diva's upcoming new album a much tougher challenge.
Gary talks about his collaboration with Dame Shirley in the video below.

Can see the interview

He said: "Most of my best songs have written themselves really quickly - 20, 30 minutes, an hour, two hours.
"The song I've written for Shirley took me three months. I kept going back to it and thinking, 'No, that bit's not good enough. I'm going to change it again.'"

And Gary admits he'll never forget the moment he first performed the song, called This Time, for Dame Shirley.
He added: "I went up to Air Studios and I met the producer, DAVID ARNOLD, and Shirley. "Then I sang her the song. I was quite nervous actually. She loved it straight away and was singing it within about two minutes.
"I just can't wait to hear the finished record."
Dame Shirley Bassey's new album The Performance is released on November 9.
