Take That Lead U.K. Music DVD Sales Surge

U.K. pop act Take That's "The Circus - Live" (Universal) was the biggest music DVD release of 2009 in Britain, moving 574,000 copies according to the Official Charts Company.

Overall, music video sales ended the year up 14.1% compared to 2008.

Michael Jackson's "Moonwalker" (Warner) was at No. 2 in 2009 with sales of 305,000, followed by "The Final Reunion" (2Entertain) by Cliff Richard and the Shadows at No. 3, which moved 217,000 units. "The Killers Live From The Royal Albert Hall" (Universal) was at No. 4, followed by Il Divo's "An Evening With Il Divo - Live In Barcelona" (Sony Music) at No. 5.

New figures from the British Video Association (BVA) using data from the Official Charts Company show December unit sales for video home entertainment up 1.8% on the same time in 2008.

Q4 sales volumes were 3% lower than the same period in 2008, when mass merchant Woolworths and entertainment retailer Zavvi were still trading. The two chains represented 13% of the market and their demise hit sales in early 2009 according to the BVA.

Sales of Blu-ray discs increased 123% year-on-year to 8.4 million units. But the rising popularity of Blu-ray was offset by a 7.3% year-on-year decline in DVD sales. Overall total sales of video dipped 5.6% to 243.5 million units from 257.9 million in 2008.

"The home entertainment industry has come through the recession fighting and rallied in the run up to Christmas," said Lavinia Carey, director general of the British Video Association, in a statement.

"DVD sales are down 5.6% due to several factors, including the effects of copyright theft and the changing retail landscape. Careful shoppers have benefited from the fantastic promotional offers last year but the loss of Woolworths' and Zavvi's 900-odd stores meant that the 13% market-share they jointly represented, worth around £300 million [$477.6 million], has been slow to replace, particularly given the high propensity of Woolworths shoppers to buy on impulse.
