Emma & Mark - press night 20-10-09

Gary sighted outside BBC Radio 1 Studios (30.10.2009)

Gary Barlow & Camilla Kerslake on GMTV

Watch Ben chat to Take That man Gary about his new record label, the Take That tour and what he really thinks about a reunion with Robbie.

Barlow promises 'one-off' duets

Take That frontman Gary Barlow says there will be some unique "one-off" duets at the Children In Need concert he's organising.
The singer is putting together a charity show at the Royal Albert Hall in London in November featuring some of the biggest names in UK music, including Muse, Sir Paul McCartney and Take That themselves.
Speaking to Chris Moyles, who will host the gig, Barlow said each act would be doing two songs but there would be also be "three or four one-off duets that have never been seen before."
When asked about the possibility of Dizzee Rascal partnering with Dame Shirley Bassey he teasingly replied: "I'm saying nothing, but make sure you're there."
Other names on the bill include Snow Patrol, Leona Lewis, Lily Allen, Cheryl Cole, Mika and Katherine Jenkins.
Barlow, who's now back at work following the unexpected death of his father two weeks ago, said he was surprised to get such a strong line-up for the concert.
"I wrote a list and sat there thinking, 'Right, if we can get half of this we'll be lucky', and every single person has agreed to do it.
"It's great. That's testament to the charity itself, people do love Children In Need. It is going to be a brilliant night and a bit of a one-off I think."
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will also add to the occasion by accompanying all the acts, in what Barlow described as a showcase of the best in UK music.

Elephant ride
The 38-year-old said after their record-breaking Circus tour, Take That were "not really doing much at the moment", but that their studio return wouldn't be far off.

Take That's Circus played to more than a million people this summer "We're starting our new record soon and we want a bit of a break now before any new music... It takes a good nine to 12 months to make an album."
The band's summer tour had exceeded their expectations, Barlow said. But he admitted he didn't appreciate the scale of the show - with its accompanying circus performers - until watching the band's upcoming live DVD.
"I was like, 'What's that going on behind us? I never knew that.' It's amazing! This other show just energises and you think 'Wow!'
"The best bit for us four was when that elephant goes up and you're like 20 metres above the whole stadium. It was hard not to smile at that point."
He also said the boys were looking forward to Mark Owen's wedding next weekend. The singer is preparing to marry his long-term fiancée Emma Ferguson, with whom he already has two children
Barlow remained tight-lipped about the event, but did admit the boys gave their bandmate a good send-off: "The stag do was good... it was grown-up messy," he joked.

The Children In Need concert takes place on 12 November and will be broadcast on BBC One on 19 November at 2000 GMT.

Take That let it Bee

THE TAKE THAT boys never stop surprising me - now they've got a secret BEE GEES karaoke tribute act, the GBs.
Their amusing alter-ego - a pun on GARY BARLOW's initials - comes to light on the lads' new live DVD, which I got to see yesterday.

Gary, MARK OWEN, HOWARD DONALD and JASON ORANGE sing a version of their own hit Rule The World in the high-pitched style of the Gibb brothers at the Abbey Road studios.

It's priceless.

Sadly, it won't ever come out as a single. But the man band are sure to get a double No1 with the DVD and the audio CD.

They are massive fans of the Bee Gees, and once covered their hit How Deep Is Your Love.

Take That Present: The Circus Live DVD, comes out on November 23.

If you're struggling for a Christmas present for the missus, your mum, auntie or sister - this is it. There's no shame in blokes owning it either. It's a two-disc masterpiece.

On the first disc is the brilliant Circus tour recorded at Wembley. It's a chance to relive the live show, which has to go down in history as one of the best.
The second is a slick film of the boys at Abbey Road doing a stripped-down version of The Circus album, with interviews between songs.
The session is shot beautifully in black and white.
The album version - just the music - comes out a week later, on November 30.

There are a few nice moments in the film when the lads banter between takes. Here are some of the highlights.

Gary: "When I was 15 I entered a comp to win a session at Abbey Road studio to record a song and then watch it being cut on vinyl. I won it. So one of my first ever recording experiences was here. It's been downhill ever since!"

Howard: "We've got a much bigger friendship now than we ever did. Gary used to write everything at such a rate we were always catching up. It's different now, with all of us sharing the writing."

Gary: "I throw gems, diamonds into the air, and they are all thrown back at me!"

Jason: "I'm the most negative in the band, asking, 'Can we do it better?' all the time. I always question if what we are doing is good enough."

Mark: "I was apprehensive about going into the studio to write together. Sometimes one of us has to go down a certain path with an idea before we all decide it's s***."

Jason: "The whole thing is greater than the sum of the parts. That realisation is a great thing. We need each other."

Mark: "I have written some great songs in my sleep. I sing lyrics into my phone. I'll wake up in the night and sing into my Dictaphone and try not to wake the missus.
"When I wake up in the morning it's just me mumbling and falling asleep - but when I'm dreaming I hear all the string arrangements and everything."

The sell-out Circus tour was seen by an incredible 1.2million people earlier this year.

Now there's every chance Take That could have the Christmas No1 DVD and album. Good luck to them.

THE Bee Gees reached No3 with their classic How Deep Is Your Love in 1977. When Take That released it in March 1996 - weeks after announcing they were splitting - it went to No1.

Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow "loved" watching new Take That DVD together

Gary Barlow has told how he played a Take That DVD for Robbie Williams - who declared that he "loved" it.

Speaking on GMTV, Gary told how he was having a meal with Robbie and suggested that they watch the recent footage of the band's tour.

Gary, 38, recalled: "I said 'Rob do you fancy having a listen?'
"I was up at his house one night having some sushi with him I said 'Shall we have a watch?'
"And I said to him 'Listen, flick through the bits you don't want to watch,' but we watched the whole thing and he loved it.
"And it was so nice to see him enjoying what we're doing."

Put to him that Robbie has said he felt he was missing out, Gary replied: "I think one of the things that Rob always says is that because it is him on his own, the whole weight of the show and being a performer is on his shoulder - all eyes are on him. And I must say, being part of a band, the responsibility is shared.
"And yeah I think he looks at that and probably would like it to be like that for him too. Yeah it's hard."

Gary said he had also listened to Robbie’s new album, Reality Killed The Video Star, declaring it was "brilliant, loved it, I knew I would".

Asked about any future plans to collaborate with his old bandmate, Gary said: "I mean, you know, everyone asks us and I do, I don't know when it will be but I definitely do, yep."

Gary also told how he signed Camilla Kerslake to his new label after she dropped off a demo CD at his office every day for six weeks.

He said of his opera singer protege: "I discovered her from her dropping CDs at my studio, and she literally dropped a CD off every day for about six weeks.
"And eventually I went down to the front desk and I said 'Where's this girl coming from? Is she attractive? Is she good?' and they were all like 'Oh yeah, you need to see her, she's great'."

The full interview airs on GMTV on ITV1 tomorrow.

Take That Soccer Song

Take That are set to record the official World Cup song for the England soccer team.
The 'Greatest Day' hitmakers - Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald - are in talks with the English Football Association to write a new anthem for the event, which takes place in South Africa next summer.
A source said: "Gary's really excited about it. He wants to make it a real belter that'll get the England fans on their feet.
"The Football Association have had approaches from lots of acts but Take That are the obvious choice."
If Take That do sign the deal, they will follow in the footsteps of New Order, the Lightening Seeds and the Spice Girls, who have all recorded and official song for the England team. Last month, it was reported Mel B wanted to get the Spice Girls back together for a one-off performance in South Africa at the same time as the World Cup, even if Victoria Beckham didn't want to take part.
A source said: "Mel's determined to get the girls back together for the World Cup and wants them to plough ahead as a foursome if Victoria doesn't want to take part. She has got the others excited by the idea of a one-off appearance. They are very interested."

Menssage Gary Barlow from your website

"Hi everyone

Can’t believe we’re in the last 3rd of the year. Even though our Tour was only 5 weeks long we’ve been living the show from January. It was a long road to that opening night but all worth it once we hit the stage. Every night was different too. I have to say it was the most enjoyable tour I’ve ever been a part of.

Thanks to all our amazing audiences and thanks to the great team of people that made our dream come true.

Hope it’s not too long till we tour again !

Little Baby Daisy

A lot has happened this year. The arrival of little Daisy has changed not only the size of our family but also provided us with a lot more work at home. For anyone who has 3 kids it’s not easy trying to give them all equal attention and at the same time trying to find sometime for you and your partner. All worth while but a challenge for sure.

Kilimanjaro Challenge

I may have said this thank you a thousand times but one more won’t hurt; To all who donated money to help our climb of Kilimanjaro, thank you so, so much. We’ve raised nearly 4 million pounds to date making our charity climb the highest earning challenge in HISTORY!!! Whooo

Coming later in the year...

I am in the process of putting together a concert for Children in Need. I hope to feature a host of great artists on one stage for a one night only performance that will be broadcast on BBC1 the week before CIN night. We’re hoping not only to raise money for the charity but also raise awareness for a truly great British Institution.

Christmas is coming!

As a band we’re putting together a great live DVD of the tour that will be out before Christmas. It will not only feature one of our four nights at Wembley Stadium but also an exclusive live acoustic session at the legendary Abbey road Studios.

Singstar have done a fantastic job on the Take that song book. Feel free to sing your heart out !!

Also we’ve put together a cracking book that shows in picture our history. Yes lot’s of embarrassing shots and stupid haircuts to sift through. It’s a nice book of memories for us guys too as it’s the culmination of 18 years of our lives and careers. Fantastic !

Look out for Camilla Kerslake

As usual any spare time I have I’m involved in trying to help and launch new artists. My big hope for this year is Camilla Kerslake. She’s only 20 years old (I’m nearly twice her age!).

She’s a classical singer with the voice of an angel.Look out for her on tv’s various and listen out for the voice behind the Waitrose advert !! Good luck Camilla !!

..And Finally

Hope you’re all well and thanks for visiting my site. I know updates are infrequent but they always arrive eventually !!!!"

'That was one Dame hard job'

Making sweet music ... Gary Barlow and Dame Shirley Bassey in the making of

GARY BARLOW spent three months labouring over the song he wrote for DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY - because he kept thinking "it's not good enough".
The singer reveals he never stretches beyond the two-hour mark when composing a tune for TAKE THAT.
However, he found the task of contributing a track to the Welsh diva's upcoming new album a much tougher challenge.
Gary talks about his collaboration with Dame Shirley in the video below.

Can see the interview

He said: "Most of my best songs have written themselves really quickly - 20, 30 minutes, an hour, two hours.
"The song I've written for Shirley took me three months. I kept going back to it and thinking, 'No, that bit's not good enough. I'm going to change it again.'"

And Gary admits he'll never forget the moment he first performed the song, called This Time, for Dame Shirley.
He added: "I went up to Air Studios and I met the producer, DAVID ARNOLD, and Shirley. "Then I sang her the song. I was quite nervous actually. She loved it straight away and was singing it within about two minutes.
"I just can't wait to hear the finished record."
Dame Shirley Bassey's new album The Performance is released on November 9.

Take That band member Mark Owen has written a song for X Factor 2008 contestant Diana Vickers. The singer will perform the song as her finale in her West End debut role "The Rise and Fall of Little Voice".
The song "Sunlight", received an eight-minute standing ovation after Diana sang it during the preview performance, according to organisers.
The tune was co-written by Jamie Norton and Ben Mark, and Vickers has described it as "beautiful".
Playwright Jim Cartwright told the Daily Mirror: "It had always been my intention to write an original song for the end of my play, when Little Voice finally sings in her own voice.
"However, when we first premiered it at the National Theatre in 1992 we ran out of time and a Judy Garland song was used."
He added: "When I first heard Sunlight with Diana Vickers singing it, tears came to my eyes. I was just thrilled. It was exactly what I wanted."
Owen said it was a "real honour" to be involved in writing the song.
Diana added: "Sunlight is absolutely beautiful, and it provides the perfect ending to a brilliant play."

The pop phenomenon that is Take That was formed in Manchester in 1990. Throughout the first half of the '90s the band sold an unbelievable 60 million records, resulting in two of the best-selling albums of the decade: Everything Changes (which was nominated for the 1994 Mercury Prize) and Greatest Hits in 1996. Their rise to the top was well-documented in the media but in Take One they tell, for the first time, their version of this incredible story of superstardom. Take One gains you exclusive insight into life on tour during those early years, with over 150 never-before-seen photographs. Glimpse at the world inside their hotel rooms, go backstage during their amazing stage shows around the globe, and see from their unique perspective the ever-present, overwhelmingly loyal fans that followed them everywhere – perhaps you'll recognise yourself... To accompany these exceptional unseen images, a narrative, written by the boys runs throughout, candidly and humorously documenting the highs and lows, the frenzy and hysteria – and the often surreal moments – of the meteoric rise of the world's greatest boy band.

When Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Mark Owen released 'Patience' on November 20, 2006, over a decade since Take That split up, the world welcomed them back with open arms to their rightful position at the top of the charts. Their return to glory has become one of the most exciting stories in British pop music and in Take Two they tell the amazing story of their comeback for the first time. With over 150 exclusive and personal images, and accompanied by humorous and revealing commentary written by the boys, relive first-hand the exceptional, and often heart-warming, experiences that make up the second part of the Take That story.

Gary Barlow "Fed Up" With Take That Reunion Rumours

Gary Barlow is "fed up" of stories claiming there will be a full Take That reunion this year.
Recent stories have hinted Robbie Williams has been in the studio with the band and will be rejoining Take That again in the coming months - once he's released his new solo CD 'Reality Killed The Video Star'.
Addressing the claims, Gary says: "I'm fed up and bored of all the different rumours. I can't answer them any differently. We're not going to be reuniting at Christmas."
"I'm still preparing a charity gig for that time and it's going really well."

Singstar Take That Extravaganza

More information here

EXCLUSIVE: GARY'S GIRL

GARY Barlow reckons launching his own record label is far more nerve-racking than stepping out at Wembley with Take That.
I hooked up with one quarter of my favourite manband as he unveiled 21-year-old classical singer Camilla Kerslake – the first signing to his Future Records label.

Gary told me afterwards: “I don’t think I have ever been as nervous about anything. Before Camilla performed I was a wreck.
“Backstage I was pacing up and down like a proud dad. This is honestly more nerve-racking than going on at Wembley.”

Gary had no need to fear as Camilla was a brilliant and brave choice of artist to sign.

However, the TT star, 38, hopes he won’t be bombarded by demo CDs from wannabes as a result.

He added: “I’m not going to sign any more artists at the moment because it takes up a lot of time.
“An album every two years with Take That already consumes so much time.
“Camilla sent me a demo CD every day for six weeks. Eventually I had a listen and saw real potential.
“I wish I’d never told that tale – now other acts are going to try the same trick. I may have to move studios.”

Gary teased the audience by introducing Camilla’s set as “the exclusive playback of the new Take That and Robbie single which is a cover of Rick Astley’s Together Forever.”

However, he was keen to set the record straight over the big fat lies circulating about a reunion with Mr Williams, 35.

He revealed: “I’m fed up and bored of all the different rumours. I can’t answer them any differently.
“We’re not going to be reuniting at Christmas.
“I’m still preparing a charity gig for that time and it’s going really well.”
Camilla’s debut single She Moved Through The Fair and self-titled debut album are out next month.

Take that, Mozart: Gary Barlow tunes up for classical career

It is a musical leap that may shock Take That’s millions of fans. Gary Barlow is the latest pop star to try bridging the cultural chasm between pop and classical.

With five Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting and 30 million record sales behind him, Barlow’s work has become one of Britain’s most successful musical exports. Now he is seeking entry into the world of symphonies and arias as composer and talentspotter.

Speaking to The Times from a New York studio, Barlow said: “I’ve set up my own record label, Future, and my first signing is a classical soprano.

“I had a small amount of classical training as a child and my mother was disappointed I didn’t go down that route. Now I’ve come round to her way of thinking.”

To begin with, Barlow will guide the career of Camilla Kerslake, 21, a four-octave coloratura soprano, who bombarded the star with demo tapes of her singing Ave Maria at his London recording studio. “I never thought a classical artist would be my first signing but I was entranced by this beautiful, pure voice,” he said.

Barlow, 38, who admits that his knowledge of classical terminology is nascent, added: “She didn’t have that wobbly, operatic sound.”

As for the kind of music he is better known for, he confirmed that there is to be a reunion between Take That and Robbie Williams. A chance meeting at the New York studio where Take That are putting the finishing touches to a live album went well.

Barlow said: “It was great to see Robbie. I’ve heard his new album and it’s absolutely fantastic. We definitely will work together in the future, we just don’t know when.”

A master of the three-minute radio hit, he is ready to broaden his composing style: “I’m using the classical skills I learnt more and more. I really like that world and I’d like to take it further in the future. The biggest issue is getting mainstream radio audiences to hear classical.”

Barlow could even become a classical Simon Cowell. “X Factor-type shows only discover a certain kind of performer,” he said. “I’m looking for people with a different set of values, in pop songwriting or classical.”

With illegal filesharing wiping £180million each year off the value of the recorded music industry, Barlow will leave the limelight to become a backseat impressario. “I love my stagework but I see my future as helping to discover the next generation of talent. As Take That we only get to record 12 songs every two years. I want to be involved in music all the time.”

Will Kerslake be a success? Terry Wogan is a fan of her version of She Moved Through the Fair, which suggests that she is heading for the lucrative classical crossover market.

Kerslake said: “I knew it was uncool to listen to opera as a kid, but I didn’t care because I loved it.”

She said of her four-octave range: “I am more like a boy soprano, someone who can sing so lightly and so high that, in the upper ranges, I become almost like an instrument.”

London Evening Standard 2/10 Why everyone wants Barlow

His week the red-tops are getting scarlet with excitement at the news that Robbie Williams has been spied in a New York recording studio with his former Take That bandmates.

All five of the original gang have gathered in Manhattan for Mark Owen's stag do — but it's not the idea of the boys playing late-night drinking games that has everyone so het up. The real excitement lies around the tantalising possibility that Williams will again have songs written for him by the all-conquering Gary
Barlow.

Having brought their dazzling Circus tour to Wembley Stadium for four nights this summer, the current incarnation of Take That is hotter than ever, and there's no such thing as time off for their chief songwriter.

Barlow has written To Love Again, a barnstorming piano ballad, with Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon for release as her latest single on 15 November. He's also composed This Time for a November comeback album by Shirley Bassey. “Gary is so good-looking and such a gentleman,” said the great dame recently.

Such is the breadth of his appeal that he's now writing for grime-pop teen favourites N-Dubz and the tabloids claim he's going to be working with the reformed Spandau Ballet. If he wrote a song for Gordon Brown, everything would probably be OK.

Then there's Barlow's record company. Future Records, a subsidiary of Take That's label Universal, has been put under Barlow's command as a reward for his band's renewed success. It is about to unveil its first signing. Camilla Kerslake, a 21-year-old from London via New Zealand, stalked Take That with a demo tape in hand until Barlow became convinced that her ghostly, operatic voice could conquer the lucrative classical crossover market. The first single, an Irish folk song entitled She Moved Through the Fair (released 2 November), has more than a bit of Enya about it. The subsequent album also features a cover of Take That's Rule the World, sung in Italian for extra classiness.

With Barlow behind her and a nation of mums in need of Christmas presents, she can't fail. “Gary's one of the biggest talents in the whole of the British music industry and an amazing mentor. How lucky am I?” she says.

It's a long way from the wilderness years after Take That's split. After his second solo album flopped in 1999, spending just one week at number 35 in the charts, Barlow never stopped working. He was in no position to be picky. While Robbie Williams was packing out stadiums, his songs found their way onto releases by Atomic Kitten, German girl group Monrose and X Factor disaster Michelle McManus. He also wrote most of two albums for Donny Osmond.

Did he go bad or were we just not paying attention? If the mark of truly great songwriters, like Dylan or Lennon and McCartney, is the song's ability to sound good in anyone's hands, does he flounder without his bandmates? Listening back to the music of those dark days — though it is difficult to describe as “dark” a period in which he wrote a song called Supersexy for boyband beefcakes Blue — it's clear that too often the songs became the property of inferior voices. A lack of composing confidence is sometimes detectable too. But dig deep and you realise he never lost it.

THE FORGOTTEN BALLADS

Gary Barlow's inspiration didn't dry up while he was in his wilderness years before Take That re-formed. Here are five gems he wrote for others that were overlooked at the time:

Butterfly
Performed by Delta Goodrem on Innocent Eyes (Epic, 2003)
Barlow co-wrote six songs on the teenage Australian soap star's debut album including this one, a fine tune that wouldn't disgrace his main band.

No Big Deal
Performed by Lara Fabian on
A Wonderful Life (Sony, 2004)
This Canada-based Celine Dion type is big in Francophone nations but didn't have much success with her second English-language album. One of Barlow's contributions was this almost rocky number with a typically memorable chorus.

Breeze on By
Performed by Donny Osmond on What I Meant to Say (Universal, 2004)
This smooth, summery single, centred on a lightly funky guitar lick and even featuring a flute solo, became a British top 10 hit for Osmond, his first since the early Seventies.

Easy Way Out
Performed by Charlotte Church on Tissues and Issues (Sony BMG, 2005)
Church's lone attempt at a pop album featured this impressive anthem, building from piano weepiness to a vast chorus loaded with strings.

For All That You Want
Performed by Gary Barlow on Twelve Months Eleven Days (BMG, 1999)
A Take That-style arm-swaying chorus that became Barlow's last solo single before he was dropped by his label. If only they'd known what was to come.
