Review of The Circus Live in "The Times"

Gary Barlow and the boys should be hired to put on the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. This live recording of their Circus Tour spectacular as it hit Wembley Stadium this summer certainly supports that argument. Whatever you think of the boy-turned- man band’s music (they play their entire back catalogue here, from early energy-fests such as Promises to the recent anthemic Greatest Day), the show that they build around it is humorous, superlatively imaginative and slick. An army of acrobats and trapeze artists flies about, a huge hot air balloon floats up into the sky — and the guys grin throughout as they take to their instruments, unicycles, and even a mechanical elephant so large that a human being flails around as its tail.
Who needs Robbie?
